Stephen Morgan, Labour MP for Portsmouth South, has marked two years since the election of the Labour Government by celebrating the progress made for women, while warning that Reform would put decades of women’s rights at risk.
Two years on from the General Election, Mr Morgan said the Labour Government is building on its proud legacy of advancing women’s equality by making women safer, strengthening rights at work, expanding childcare and improving women’s healthcare.
However, they warned that Reform’s plans to scrap the Employment Rights Act and abolish the Equality Act would risk “turning the clock back on women’s rights.”
Since entering government, the Labour Government has:
- Published a landmark Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy to halve violence against women and girls within a decade.
- Introduced Gender Pay Gap and Menopause Action Plans to help close the gender pay gap and support women to thrive at work.
- Strengthened women’s rights at work through the Employment Rights Act 2025, including stronger protections for pregnant women and new mothers, day one parental leave rights and improved flexible working.
- Delivered the biggest expansion of childcare in the country’s history, including school based nurseries, free breakfast clubs and expanded childcare support.
- Renewed the Women’s Health Strategy, putting women’s voices at the heart of healthcare while cutting waiting lists and improving access to diagnosis and treatment.
Commenting, Stephen Morgan, MP for Portsmouth South, said:
“I am proud of the progress this Labour Government has delivered for women over the last two years.
“While Labour is building on our proud record of advancing women’s equality, Reform would scrap the Employment Rights Act and abolish the Equality Act, turning the clock back on women’s rights and putting decades of progress at risk.
“I will always stand up for the rights of women in Portsmouth and continue working to ensure every woman has the safety, opportunity and security she deserves.”
