Stephen Morgan MP has marked two years since the election of the Labour Government by highlighting the progress made in delivering for LGBT+ people, while reaffirming the government’s commitment to advancing equality.
Two years on from the election, Mr Morgan said the Government has begun delivering on key manifesto commitments to improve the lives of LGBT+ people at home and support LGBT+ rights internationally.
Since entering government, the Labour Government has:
- Published a draft Bill that would deliver a full trans-inclusive ban on conversion practices
- Taken action to equalise the law so that hate crime targeting LGBT+ people attracts the same sentencing as offences motivated by race or religion.
- Righted the wrongs of the past, delivering financial recognition for LGBT veterans following the Etherton Review.
- Stepped up efforts to reduce HIV transmissions and improve access to healthcare.
- Provided nearly £500,000 of specialist funding for LGBT+-focused domestic abuse services.
- Established a £21 million fund to support LGBT+ rights around the world.
While recognising that challenges remain, Mr Morgan said the Government remains committed to working with LGBT+ communities to deliver further progress over the course of this Parliament.
This follows Mr Morgan’s own actions to protect and support Portsmouth’s LGBTQ+ people. Beyond supporting measures taken by the Government and engaging with local LGBTQ+ organisations, Mr Morgan also launched a campaign to call for an end to conversion practices. This can be read about in further detail and contributed to here.
Commenting, Stephen Morgan, MP for Portsmouth South, said:
“Two years ago, people voted for change, and I am proud that this Labour Government has already taken important steps to improve the lives of LGBTQ+ people.
“While there is still more to do to achieve full equality, I am proud of the progress we’ve made over the past two years and will continue working to ensure every LGBTQ+ person in Portsmouth can live their lives free from discrimination and abuse.”
Minister for LGBT+ Equality Olivia Bailey said:
“Two years after Labour was elected, we are delivering on our promise to build on our proud legacy and deliver for the LGBTQ+ community.
“From action on conversion practices and hate crime to defending LGBTQ+ rights abroad and supporting LGBT+ veterans, we are delivering meaningful change while recognising there is more work still to do. Labour will always stand with the LGBQT+ community.”
