Stephen went to Priory School, a stones throw from his constituency office and house where he grew up. He cites his desire to make sure schools in the local area give young people the opportunity to work hard and aim high as the motivation behind his continued campaign for better education.
To name just a few of his recent actions, Stephen has:
- Visited every school in the local area to meet with Heads, chat with pupils and gather feedback
- Conducted independent survey research on school funding in the local area
- Taken a delegation of teachers from each age range to lobby the then Government Minister
- Meets regularly with education charities, experts, unions, teachers, parents and students
- Hosted roundtable discussions with teachers
In July 2024, Stephen was named as a Minister in the Department for Education following Labour’s general election victory.
Commenting on the appointment, Stephen said:
“It is an honour to serve in government as a Minister in the Department for Education.
“Education has the unique power to transform lives and with a Labour government we will make educating and empowering children in Portsmouth and across the country a priority once again.
“Our ambition is to break down barriers to opportunity, drive high and rising standards and give every child the best start in life. I’m delighted to get started.”
