Plans to redevelop the Hard Interchange are well underway. The old interchange was not suitable for transport requirements.
By redesigning the site layout the council will make much better use of the space and make it safer for all people using the area. The concrete deck and structure supporting it also needed maintenance work.
Challenges included significant conflict between vehicle movement; seasonal capacity issues; bussing/coaching conflicts; multiple crossing points and narrow and unwelcoming pedestrian routes; and; a large number of barriers and guarding resulting in an unsightly appearance at a major tourist location in the city.
It is hoped the new scheme will enhance the gateway to the city, improve the built environment and passenger safety and facilitate safe, efficient and flexible bus operation within a pleasant and secure environment.

A temporary interchange is in place maintaining all bus and coach services as well as access to the station and ferry terminals.
International architects AHR who have had great success building transport interchanges across the world including Manchester, Dubai and Singapore have designed the new building. The city council has liaised with AHR and the various transport operators to ensure the new interchange meets local needs.
Work is due to complete in early 2017.
