In the first 100 days of this Labour Government we have already begun the change

By 11 October 2024No Comments

For 14 years, the Conservatives ducked difficult decisions and ran down our public services. On 4 July, the British people voted for change – and Labour is delivering that change.

Today marks 100 days since you re-elected me as your local MP, and the country put Keir Starmer in Downing Street to fix our country after 14 years of Tory chaos.

On Thursday, the Government announced the biggest upgrade to workers’ rights in a generation by introducing the Employment Rights Bill to Parliament.

This bill will strengthen statutory sick pay, provide further protections against unfair dismissal and end exploitative zero-hour contracts amongst other things. You can read more about the bill here.

As well as this, in 100 days the Labour Government has:

  • Created the National Wealth Fund
  • Launched a major review of planning
  • Kickstarted a devolution revolution
  • Reformed the Low Pay Commission remit
  • Introduced the Rail Franchising Bill to bring our railways into public ownership
  • Introduced the Better Buses Bill
  • Agreed a deal to put an end to the doctors strikes
  • Cut red tape to help recruit a 1,000 newly-qualified GPs
  • Appointed a new Border Security Commander to take forward the fight against criminal smuggling gangs
  • Launched a knife crime coalition
  • Started setting up GB Energy
  • Took action against water bosses that pollute our water
  • Scrapped the ban on onshore wind
  • Scrapped single word Ofsted judgements
  • Launched Skills England
  • Established the Child Poverty Taskforce
  • Introduced a bill to ban no fault evictions
  • Introduced plans to remove all hereditary peers from Lords
  • Authorised compensation for infected blood scandal victims
  • And so much more!

Since taking office in July, the true extent of the Conservatives’ irresponsibility has been revealed.

The new Labour Government has inherited a £22 billion black hole from the Conservatives – the worst economic inheritance a government has faced since the Second World War.

But that doesn’t mean we are not ambitious for Britain.

As we mark 100 days since taking office, we have delivered more for working people and families in Portsmouth than the Conservatives did in 14 years.

This Labour Government has already begun to deliver our national missions: making our economy stable, launching a new border security command, setting up Great British Energy, and setting out ambitious plans to build new homes.

The work of change is just beginning. The new Government will rebuild our country, and deliver a decade of national renewal.
