City MP launches campaign to cut NHS waiting times in Portsmouth

Portsmouth South MP Stephen Morgan has launched a new campaign to cut NHS waiting lists for Portsmouth people.

After fourteen years of chaos under the Conservatives, 7.5 million people including thousands in Portsmouth are on the NHS waiting list. 3.1 million have been waiting longer than 18 weeks for treatment, the maximum amount of time patients are supposed to wait.

Launching his new campaign this week, Mr Morgan is asking Portsmouth people to back plans to cut waiting times with 40,000 more evening and weekend appointments each week, paid for by cracking down on tax avoidance and non-dom loopholes.

Constituents can show their support to cut NHS waiting lists by signing the city MP’s petition: https://www.stephenmorgan.org.uk/waiting-times/

The government has already announced a series of measures to cut waiting lists including ending the junior doctors strikes and sending teams of top clinicians to hospitals across the country to roll out reforms – developed by surgeons – to treat more patients, and cut waiting lists.

The new government has also kickstarted engagement for Labour’s 10 Year Plan for the NHS to be published next spring.

Commenting, Portsmouth South MP Stephen Morgan said:

“After 14 years of the Tories, our NHS is on the brink and Portsmouth people are paying the price, with thousands across our city stuck on waiting lists.

“The new Labour government is taking immediate action to cut waiting times by ending the strikes which affected so many, and with 40,000 more evening and weekend appointments each week, paid for by cracking down on tax avoidance and non-dom loopholes.

“I am asking Portsmouth people to show their support for these positive plans to undo the damage which the Tories inflicted on our local NHS, to get it back on its feet and make it fit so it is there for us all in when we need it.”

Stephen Morgan has fiercely fought to protect Portsmouth’s NHS services and has made getting the NHS back on its feet one of his key priorities since being elected.

The city MP recently welcomed the opening of a new medical school which he long campaigned for, and which has begun training future Portsmouth doctors, helping provide a steady flow of medics to the region.
