“If you make your life in Britain, you should pay your taxes here”: Stephen Morgan MP calls for Government to abolish non-dom tax status

Portsmouth South MP Stephen Morgan has called on the government to adopt Labour’s policy of abolishing non-dom status and to use that money for one of the biggest expansions to the NHS workforce in history, and for Breakfast Clubs in every primary school in England.

The city MP made the call ahead of today’s opposition day debate from the Labour Party on non-domicile tax status.

As prices rise and the tax burden on working people increases, people who claim non-domicile tax status don’t pay tax in the UK despite living here.

Labour has committed to abolish non-dom status, and introduce a modern scheme for people who are genuinely living in the UK for short periods to allow us to continue to attract top international talent.

It is calculated that the regime of not taxing offshore income of non-doms costs more than £3bn. A Labour government would use the revenue to fund the biggest recruitment drive in modern NHS history, and breakfast clubs for primary age children.

Stephen Morgan MP, Member of Parliament for Portsmouth South, said:

“The Tories have repeatedly failed to deal with the non-dom tax status loophole and are choosing to raise more taxes from working people in Portsmouth.

“It is very simple. If you make your life in Britain, you should pay your taxes here.

“A Labour government will abolish non-dom tax status to create a fairer tax system and use the revenue to train a new generation of NHS workers and deliver breakfast clubs for every primary age child in England. That is exactly what Portsmouth people need”.

Speaking ahead of the Opposition Day debate James Murray MP, Labour’s Shadow Financial Secretary, said:

“If you work here and make your life here, you should pay your taxes here. That applies to Tory government ministers as much as it does to everyone else.

“That’s why Labour will abolish the non-dom tax loophole. It’s outdated and unfair.

“We will use that money to pay for one of the biggest expansions of our NHS workforce in history, and to introduce breakfast clubs at every primary school in England.

“It’s outrageous that while working people are paying their taxes the Prime Minister and Chancellor have been turning a blind eye to those who use offshore trusts for tax purposes as well as refusing to abolish non-dom tax status.

“Labour will clear up thirteen years of sleaze, abolish non-dom status, and provide the transparency that the British people deserve.”

The Labour Party has also committed to cracking down on the use of hidden offshore trusts that allow people to avoid paying tax here in the UK.

Labour’s opposition day motion:

That there be laid before this House, no later than 28 February 2023, a copy of the Treasury analysis related to the effect of abolition of the non-domicile tax status on the public revenue referred to by the Chancellor of the Exchequer in evidence to the Treasury Committee on 23 November 2022 together with any other document or analysis relating to that matter prepared for the Chancellor’s consideration since 14 October 2022.
