Government taking swift action to support Portsmouth renters says city MP

Portsmouth MP Stephen Morgan has said the government is taking swift action to protect renters, with a long-term promise to alleviate the crisis in private renting by boosting housing supply.

In July’s King’s Speech, the government introduced a Renters’ Rights Bill to remove the threat of arbitrary evictions, end manufactured rental bidding wars and increase tenant security and stability.

Mr Morgan made the comments following a recent Cuppa and Chat event with constituents on the topic of housing.

The coffee morning provided an opportunity for constituents to have their views heard and receive helpful advice from experts on issues including accessing affordable and decent housing in Portsmouth.

Commenting, Portsmouth South MP Stephen Morgan said:

“Everyone in our city deserves to have a secure roof over their head, but sadly that is not the case for too many families renting their homes privately.

“That’s why the government is taking swift action to increase security and stability for Portsmouth renters through a range of measures including a ban Section 21 ‘no-fault’ evictions.

“By boosting the number of homes in our city and across the country, we will also find the long-term solutions we need to the housing crisis currently impacting so many.”

Mr Morgan has long campaigned to increase social and affordable housing in Portsmouth and increase the rights of renters in the city.

The Labour Government will deliver the biggest increase in social and affordable housebuilding in a generation. It will also:

  • Strengthen planning obligations to ensure new developments provide more affordable homes.
  • Make changes to the Affordable Homes Programme to ensure that it delivers more homes from existing funding.
  • Support councils and housing associations to build their capacity and make a greater contribution to affordable housing supply.
  • Prioritise the building of new social rented homes.
  • Better protect our existing stock by reviewing the increased right to buy discounts introduced in 2012 and increasing protections on newly built social housing.
