Commenting on the Government’s announcement that nine million pensioners will receive Winter Fuel Payments this winter, Portsmouth South MP Stephen Morgan said:
“I welcome the announcement that thousands more pensioners in Portsmouth will receive Winter Fuel Payments this winter.
“These changes will ensure three-quarters of pensioners in England and Wales automatically receive the payment this year.
“Targeting Winter Fuel Payments was a tough decision the government had to make given the disastrous economic inheritance left by the Conservatives.
“I believe it is right that we continue to means-test this payment so that it is targeted and fair, rather than restoring eligibility to everyone including the wealthiest.”
Mr Morgan recently welcomed news that pensioners in Portsmouth received a pay boost of up to £470.
This came after the government confirmed a 4.1% increase in the state pension for 2025/26.
The Labour Government is committed to the pensions triple lock, which guarantees that the state pension goes up each year by the highest of 2.5%, inflation, or earnings growth, for the whole of the parliament – at a cost of £30bn.
