Stephen Morgan MP attended Portsmouth and Southsea’s Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club to engage with veterans, their families and service organisations about their experiences and what support they need from the next Government.
Mr Morgan visited Portsmouth with a visit to Portsmouth and Southsea’s Breakfast Club, an independently run service providing free befriending support for members of the armed forces and veterans in Portsmouth, to see how they support local people and provide a social space for veterans to get together.
Mr Morgan described the breakfast club as a ‘vital service’ which provides veterans in Portsmouth and Southsea a safe community of likeminded people to combat loneliness.
1 in 4 surveyed by the Royal British Legion indicated that they feel lonely and socially isolated ‘Always’ or ‘Often’, with 70% agreeing that loneliness and social isolation are issues in the Armed Forces community.
Following the event, Portsmouth MP Stephen Morgan sad:
“It was a pleasure to attend for a chat with local veterans about the issues that concern them.
Among the range of challenges facing the armed forces community, Portsmouth and Southsea Breakfast Club provides a vital lifeline of befriending, community and support.
I will continue to listen to veterans in our area carefully to see what actions can be taken to improve support, and do all I can to provide a voice for Portsmouth’s armed forces and veterans in Parliament”
Mr Morgan has taken a range of actions to support Armed Services Personnel and Veterans in Portsmouth, through his former role as Shadow Minister for the Armed Forces, and will continue campaigning for homes fit for heroes and strengthened services and support for veterans. He recently called on the Government to publish the LGBT+ Veterans Independent Review and will be working closely with Fighting with Pride to ensure justice is served.
