Portsmouth MP raises urgent need for fuel supplies in Gaza

Stephen Morgan MP used Foreign, Commonwealth and Development questions in the House of Commons to highlight concerns raised with him by constituents and Medical Aid for Palestinians, regarding the urgent need for fuel supplies in Gaza.

It comes as the first aid trucks enter Gaza but fuels remain scarce, leading to the closure of the area’s last water desalination plant and seven primary health care facilities.

Several hospitals, including an oncology hospital, are at risk of closure due to the lack of fuel for generators.

Without the necessary fuel supplies, international organisations have warned that the risk of humanitarian catastrophe will likely remain, and that aid delivered so far will not achieve its full intended impact.

Mr Morgan said civilians must not be targeted and innocent lives must be protected, through humanitarian corridors and humanitarian access, with proper protection for all those who work selflessly so aid can be delivered to victims.

The city MP visited the Occupied Palestinian Territories in September with Medical Aid for Palestinians to see firsthand the support they provide to communities in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and refugee camps.

Stephen Morgan MP asked the Government:

“Does the Minister agree with me, that the delivery of fuel supplies into Gaza is essential, to prevent further humanitarian catastrophe, and to ensure that the delivery of aid achieves its full impact?”

Commenting MP Stephen Morgan said:

This is an urgent situation and civilians in Gaza need to know the world is not simply watching, but acting, to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe.”

“We have seen children forced to flee their homes, clean water running out and hospitals barely able to function.”

“My constituents are rightly concerned by the suffering that has unfolded in Israel and Gaza following the horrific and ongoing terrorist attack by Hamas, which is why I raised the urgent need for fuel supplies to reach Gaza to prevent this suffering deepening further.”

Labour is calling for the Government to do everything in its power to work with partners to get food, water, and medicine to innocent civilians, and to ensure that fuel is allowed into Gaza to provide essential power for hospitals, water and sanitation systems.

Mr Morgan utterly condemns the atrocities committed by Hamas on the 7 October and the harrowing events that have subsequently unfolded as a result of Hamas’s actions.

He has asked a number of questions of Ministers based on concerns received from constituents and humanitarian organisations, and is in touch with a range of organisations to support affected communities.
