Portsmouth MP encourages residents to pay tribute to our Armed Forces service and sacrifice ahead of Remembrance 2023

By 9 November 2023No Comments

Stephen Morgan MP has called for residents in Portsmouth to honour and remember the sacrifice of our UK Armed Forces on Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday.

On 11 and 12 November, communities nationwide will mark Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday together, paying tribute to those who fought and died in the First World War and all conflicts since.

Today, our UK and Commonwealth servicemen and servicewomen continue to play a vital role in protecting British interests and values, training Ukrainian forces and upholding security and stability worldwide.

The Royal British Legion (RBL) is working with and in local communities to raise much-needed funds to support our Armed Forces communities.

Labour fully backs the charity’s efforts to mark remembrance and its efforts to support the teaching of remembrance in schools across the country, ensuring its importance is passed on to the next generation.

Ahead of Remembrance 2023, commenting City MP Stephen Morgan said:

“Remembrance is a special time in Portsmouth. We know more than many that servicemen and servicewomen, veterans and their families from Portsmouth and across the country sacrifice so much for our security and safety.

“From the First World War to aiding Ukraine in its fight against Russia’s illegal invasion, UK and Commonwealth service personnel in our Armed Forces have always and will always protect us at home and abroad.

“We must recognise their ongoing efforts and those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. I encourage Portsmouth residents to support the local poppy appeal and pay tribute to those who serve.”

Shadow Defence Secretary John Healey MP, added:

“On Remembrance, we come together as a grateful nation to honour our Armed Forces personnel, who have served and continue to serve our country.

“This year, service personnel have continued to play a leading role in the UK’s united support for Ukraine, training troops, delivering vital supplies, and offering crucial reassurance to our NATO allies and their security.

“We pay tribute to those we have lost in conflict throughout the years. Now and always, we will remember them.”

Mr Morgan will be contributing to the House of Commons Speaker’s Constituency Garden of Remembrance and attending various Armistice Day and Remembrance events across the constituency over the weekend.
