Portsmouth MP backs plans to make Britain a clean energy superpower and world leader in green jobs

Stephen Morgan MP is backing a plan to make Britain a clean energy superpower and to boost the wealth and jobs in Britain’s coastal communities, benefiting Portsmouth.

Launching Labour’s mission to make Britain a clean energy superpower by 2030, Keir Starmer recently set out a plan to boost the wealth and jobs in Britain’s industrial heartlands and coastal communities, including communities with ties to fossil fuel production like coal, oil, and gas.

The scheme will reward clean energy developers with a “British Jobs Bonus” if they invest in good jobs and supply chains in these areas.

Independent analysis suggests that Labour’s “British Jobs Bonus” will attract up to 65,000 clean energy jobs into the UK’s industrial heartlands and coastal communities by 2030.

For coastal communities such as Portsmouth, the plan promises to revolutionise existing industry and change the contract for all renewables to ensure that all corners of the country finally feel the benefits of the green transition.

Portsmouth MP Stephen Morgan said:

“I am pleased to see Labour’s mission launch incentivising companies to target their investment particularly at the areas that most need it, including coastal communities such as Portsmouth.

Over the last 13 years, the Tories have been squandering this opportunity. Jobs and supply chains have gone abroad and, too often, the green jobs that have arrived have been marked by insecurity, low pay, and bad conditions.

Only Labour has a plan that can take on the climate crisis while also building a fairer, more prosperous country in every part of Britain.”

Commenting on his plans, Keir Starmer added:

“I am delighted to launch the Labour Party’s national mission on clean energy. A cause that will create good jobs, well-paid jobs, half a million new jobs, 30,000 in England.

It will power us forward towards net-zero, generate growth right across the country, end the suffocating cost of living crisis and get Putin’s boot off our throat with real energy security.

A stronger, more secure Britain, once again at the service of working people, with cheaper bills and clean electricity by 2030.”

Mr Morgan has made addressing the climate crisis one of his political priorities. He has taken a range of actions working to reduce Portsmouth’s vulnerabilities to sea level change and coastal erosion, including meeting with local environmentalists, supporting climate change in the school curriculum, and lobbying Ministers to meet net zero targets.
