  • Britain’s leading hospitality businesses including McDonald’s, Nando’s and Fuller’s commit to hiring 100,000 young people not in education, employment or training through a major partnership with UKHospitality
  • Comes as part of wider reforms to ensure young people get the support they need to take up education, training and work opportunities

Stephen Morgan MP has welcomed the announcement of the Government’s partnership with UKHospitality, which is set to deliver 100,000 new jobs for unemployed young people across the UK, including here in Portsmouth.

As part of this Government’s new partnership, major employers will provide paid employment as well as work experience and training opportunities for 18 to 24-year-olds who are not in education, work or training.

In his position, Mr Morgan has continuously advocated for and taken action to provide employment opportunities to young people within the city, such as giving his support towards the Government’s commission the Milburn Review into the causes of high unemployment and inactivity among 16–24-year-olds. This can be read about in further detail here.

Commenting, Stephen Morgan, MP for Portsmouth South, said:

“A young person’s first job can be life changing, with the ability to kick-start a career, build confidence and provide valuable experience. I am delighted that this new partnership will create opportunities for those who need them within our city.

“In recent years, Portsmouth has seen a rise in young people who out of work and not in education or training, along with the rest of the UK. The longer this situation continues, the longer these individuals are held back and unable to progress in life.

“Labour has a plan to get Britain working, and as part of this we will that ensure no young person is left behind. This unfortunate rise is one of the most important issues of our time, and I back the Government’s mission to give hope back to our young people by addressing it.”

Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden said:

“Hospitality has long provided young people with a route into the world of work. I’m delighted that the industry is helping unemployed young people get their first step on the ladder and build their careers.”

This builds on Labour’s announcement last month of 100,000 jobs in the retail sector, developed with the support of former M&S chief executive Marc Bolland who is convening employers to help the million young people not in education, work or training.
