‘Labours plan to rebuild Britain promises a more prosperous Portsmouth’ says City MP following Shadow Chancellors conference speech

Stephen Morgan MP has welcomed Labour’s economic plan for Government focusing on growth and green jobs, following a speech made by the Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves at Labour’s annual conference in Liverpool today.

The Shadow Chancellor set out Labour’s vision to rebuild Britain after 13 years of economic mismanagement under Conservative rule, which has resulted in soaring energy, food, and mortgage prices, making life more and more difficult for ordinary working people.

Rachel Reeves committed to putting economic security first and rebuilding the economy in the interests of working people in every part of the country, while sticking to ironclad fiscal rules to prevent a repetition of the devastation Liz Truss and the Tory Party have inflicted on family finances.

The Shadow Chancellor committed to restore investment as a share of GDP to the level it was under the last Labour government, adding an additional £50 billion to our GDP every single year.

Mr Morgan said the plan promised a more prosperous Portsmouth, ending the sticking plaster politics of the last 13 years with a long-term plan for growth for cities and coastal communities such as Portsmouth.

This investment will be centered on the Green Industrial Strategy, a plan to support Britain in harnessing new technology to transition to net zero while creating jobs up and down the country, including Portsmouth.

The Shadow Chancellor also committed to protecting high streets and small businesses from decline, levying a windfall tax on energy giants to reduce customer bills, and abolishing the nondom tax status to fund the NHS.

Following the speech, commenting Portsmouth MP Stephen Morgan said:

“Every day in our city we are exposed to the consequences of 13 years of economic decay, whether it be the demise of our high streets or the soaring cost of living.

Ordinary working people in Portsmouth are rightly asking themselves if another 5 years of this Conservative government is the answer.

As Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves has set out today, an incoming Labour Government’s central mission is to deliver growth that makes all parts of our country better off. It’s time for change, a change with a Labour Government, that will deliver economic growth that every family and business in Portsmouth will benefit from.”
