Labour’s Green Prosperity Plan will benefit Portsmouth by cutting family energy bills and bringing good jobs to the local community

Labour’s Green Prosperity Plan will benefit Portsmouth, by saving £300 off the average energy bill for families and bringing good jobs to the local community, Stephen Morgan MP has confirmed.

Labour’s Green Prosperity Plan is the party’s landmark plan to grow Britain’s economy, cut energy bills once and for all, and make Britain energy independent.

The party has today confirmed that this policy will have the following key benefits for Portsmouth:

  • Tackling the cost of living crisis by saving families up to £300 off their average annual energy bills by 2030
  • Supporting the creation of up to 77,000 jobs in the South East, by investing in British industries, bringing good jobs to places such as Portsmouth
  • Upgrading and insulating 446,000 in the South East, further cutting energy bills for families and slashing fuel poverty
  • Setting up Great British Energy, a publicly-owned energy company, to invest in of locally-owned clean projects that the community will own and benefit from

The City MP previously confirmed Portsmouth will be essential to Labour’s plan to make Britain a clean energy superpower, notably through the party’s commitment to £1.8 billion investment in Britain’s port infrastructure.

Labour’s plan will include investments to drive local and economic growth, with a National Wealth Fund will help to create up to half a million jobs in Britain’s industrial heartlands, giving opportunities to plumbers, electricians, welders, and workers in every single nation and region of the country.

This historic investment in working people and their communities is the only way out of the high energy bills, energy insecurity, and the doom-loop of low growth, high taxes and crumbling public services under Rishi Sunak’s Conservatives.

A large part of that investment will be paid for by a proper windfall tax on oil and gas giants, so those who have profited from energy insecurity pay for the investment needed to rebuild industry, lower bills and make sure we are never at the mercy of dictators like Putin again.

Commenting, Portsmouth South MP Stephen Morgan said:

“Our Green Prosperity Plan is about turning a corner on fourteen years of Conservative decline and investing in Britain’s future.

“Just as the last Labour Government led the way on upgrading Britain’s ports benefitting surrounding cities and towns, the next Labour Government will lead the way in ensuring these ports are central to our green transition, creating good jobs in coastal cities such as Portsmouth.

“Only Labour has a plan to escape the Tory cycle of high energy bills, energy insecurity, and low growth, through a historic investment in Portsmouth’s working people and our community.”

Commenting on how Labour’s Green Prosperity Plan will benefit Portsmouth, Keir Starmer MP, Leader of the Labour Party said:

“Fourteen years of the Conservatives’ failed energy policy has left us with high energy bills exposed to the manipulations of fossil fuel dictators.

“From Great British Energy, our publicly owned energy company to invest in clean power, to our National Wealth Fund to invest in bringing good jobs to our communities, to our Warm Homes Plan, a Labour government is determined to work in partnership with the people of Portsmouth to create the good, well-paid jobs.

“This is a model of what Labour will achieve in every community across our country- investing in Britain so we can grow our economy, and put an end to fourteen years of decline under the Conservatives.”
