Labour will ‘revive’ neighbourhood policing by putting 13,000 more ‘bobbies on the beat’ – City MP

Stephen Morgan MP has said Labour will ‘revive’ neighbourhood policing by putting 13,000 more bobbies on the beat.

Labour has said in government it will bring back proper neighbourhood policing by putting 13,000 more police and PCSOs on our streets in community teams to keep residents safe.

The party has said its ‘Neighbourhood Policing Programme’ would recruit an additional 10,000 neighbourhood officers, PCSOs and specials, and ringfence a further 3000 officers from the Police Uplift. These plans include hiring 3000 additional officers, 4000 PCSOs, and 3000 specials.

Labour’s plans are the equivalent of giving every constituency in England and Wales 15-20 extra neighbourhood police – formed of officers, PCSOs, and Specials.

Policing and especially neighbourhood policing have been hard hit by Government austerity. There are 6,000 fewer officers in neighbourhood teams than 7 years ago, leaving hard working officers badly overstretched and communities let down.

Labour has also said it will reform policing so that police forces return to neighbourhood policing teams, increase professional standards, increase the number of criminals caught and charged, and restore public confidence in the vital work the police and emergency services do to keep us safe.

The reforms will overhaul training, vetting and misconduct procedures and require full professional standards to be adopted and enforced by all police forces, including compulsory anti racism training and compulsory training on violence against women and girls.

Mr Morgan, who welcomed the news, has been a tireless campaigner to get more bobbies on the beat in Portsmouth and fairer funding for Hampshire Constabulary to tackle crime, reduce local anti-social behaviour and help violence against women and girls.

As well as joining police patrols across the constituency, raising local concerns in Parliament, and regularly meeting with senior police leaders to discuss priorities and concerns, the Portsmouth MP is set to host a coffee morning for constituents to have their say on crime and anti-social behaviour on Saturday 22 October 2022, 10:30-11:30am at St Margaret’s Church, Southsea, PO4 9DD. Constituents must book a place to attend and can do so on his website.

The Member of Parliament for Portsmouth South, Stephen Morgan, said:

Making our city safer is one of my top priorities, and the next Labour government will deliver it with our Neighbourhood Policing Programme.

“People should be able to feel safe walking the streets they live in, and our plans would deliver up to 40 more neighbourhood police in Portsmouth.

“The Tories have badly let down communities like ours, leaving local police badly overstretched. Labour would put an end to that.”
