More and more people across Portsmouth are backing Labour’s plan to ‘Make Work Pay’ as local Labour campaigners and union activists join forces to promote the campaign to make work pay.
Labour’s plan to ban zero hours contracts, end fire and rehire and introduce a genuine living wage is set out in the New Deal for Working People
A Labour Government will build an economy that works for working people, bringing forward an Employment Rights Bill to legislate for this within a hundred days of taking office.
Labour’s New Deal will:
- Ban zero-hour contracts
- End fire and rehire
- Ensure a genuine living wage
- Guarantee basic rights from day one
- Give you stronger, properly enforced, protections at work
- Strengthen sick pay and extend it to low paid workers
- Tackle the gender pay gap

City MP Stephen Morgan is working with local Labour councillors and council candidates alongside trade unions Unison and GMB to strengthen workers’ rights and make Britain work for working for people.
On Labour’s plans, Portsmouth South’s Stephen Morgan MP, said:
“Everyone in our city deserves a job they can live on and build a life on, no matter who they are or what job they do.
“Labour’s ambition to ensure a fair day’s pay for a day’s work is core to our values. We all deserve high-quality, secure, rewarding jobs.
“The Tories promised to level up rights at work, but instead they’ve failed working people in Portsmouth and across the country and ushered in a race to the bottom. People are worse off, trapped in the cycle of insecure work, and unable to plan for the future.
“Labour’s New Deal for Working People is our plan to boost wages, make work more secure and support working people to thrive. It’s how Labour will make work pay – ensuring a genuine living wage, banning zero hour contracts, and ending fire and rehire”.
Angela Rayner, Labour Deputy Leader And Shadow Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, added:
“A Labour Government will build an economy that works for working people, bringing forward an Employment Rights Bill to legislate for this within a hundred days of taking office.
“Our New Deal is core to our mission to bring growth in Britain, raising living standards and boosting productivity in every part of the country. It’s how we’ll end the Tories’’ cycle of low pay, low investment and low productivity.”
“As both a pro-worker and pro-business party, we know that only by creating well-paid jobs across all parts of our country will make working people better off and more secure.”
