Portsmouth’s communities are being encouraged to come together this summer with the support of resident-led local events.
The neighbourhood-based events, known as the ‘Great Get Together’, aim to bring residents together over a weekend in June (17-18) in the biggest local celebrations planned since the Queen’s diamond jubilee.
The weekend has been organised by the Jo Cox Foundation – established after the murder of the late Jo Cox MP – and the ‘Big Lunch’. People interested in getting involved by organising a fun event can get a free kit filled with tips, ideas and inspiration.
The city council is also providing support to make local events a success in our city. All organisers need to do is complete an event application and arrange suitable insurance to get support.
Cllr Stephen Morgan, Portsmouth’s Labour Leader said:
“The Great Get Together looks set to be a fantastic celebration. The Big Lunch has taken place every June since 2009 supported by the Big Lottery Fund bringing local groups and people together to celebrate in their communities.
At the heart of this initiative for me is the belief in togetherness and achieving a sense of community, collaboration and fun. I hope lots of people take up this opportunity in our great city of our’s!”
The Great Get Together is supported by charities, faith groups and other organisations including the Women’s Institute, the Countryside Alliance, the RNLI, Help for Heroes, Mumsnet, the Glastonbury Festival, the TUC, the Premier League, Hope Not Hate, Amnesty International, Oxfam, Save the Children and the NSPCC.
