Stephen Morgan MP has hailed Labour’s by-election victory in Selby and Ainsty as a historic win that demonstrates that the country is ready for a Labour government.
Labour overturned a 20,137 majority and broke the record for the largest Conservative majority it had overturned at a by-election since 1945.
Commenting on the results, Portsmouth South MP Stephen Morgan said:
“Yesterday’s results show that after 13 years of Tory chaos, the country has had enough of the Conservatives and want a Labour government.
“This resonates with what I hear on the doorstep up and down the country where people are demanding change and a fresh start by voting Labour.
“People can’t get a doctor’s appointment, are struggling to pay their bills and have seen their mortgage payments skyrocket because of Tory economic failure.
“They are demanding a government that can get a grip and show some leadership. To focus on the things that matter to them and to provide some hope and optimism about the future.”
On what this means for the next General Election, the city MP added:
“As we know, only Labour can defeat the Tories in Portsmouth and across the country at a General Election.
“Last night, we saw how powerful the demand for change is with Labour overturning a majority of over 20,000 in Selby and Ainsty.
“With a General Election expected next year, we must continue to listen to voters to earn their trust and demonstrate that Labour can deliver the change we need to build a better Britain.”
