City MP Stephen Morgan this week visited one of Portsmouth’s nurseries to understand some of challenges the childcare sector is facing in the city and see the support available for local families.
Located in a quiet cul-de-sac just off Queen Street in Portsea, the YMCA’s nursery provides excellent quality childcare for the local community.
The nursery is purpose built with two dedicated enclosed gardens, offering local children a fantastic environment for their learning and development. Meals are prepared fresh daily so we children get access to healthy, tasty and nutritious meals.
Stephen paid a visit to the provision to meet with staff and take a tour of the facility on the site of St George’s Beneficial Church of England Primary School during the Easter holiday period.

“At a time when real incomes are increasingly squeezed, the cost of childcare can often be a real challenge.
Those families on the lowest incomes, who are not eligible for the Government’s extended entitlement to free childcare, can face the greatest pressure as costs continue to rise but additional Government support is not forthcoming.
It was really good to visit the YMCA Nursery in Portsea to see how the team is supporting local families and delivering affordable, sustainable childcare for families across our city. I look forward to working with the team to improve outcomes for our community in this special part of Portsmouth”.
Angela Rayner MP, Labour’s Shadow Education Secretary, has recently announced the next Labour government will give a fully-funded offer of 30 hours of free childcare to every 2-4 year old in England.
