City MP meets with local Fairtrade representatives during Fairtrade Fortnight

By 1 October 2026No Comments

Stephen Morgan MP has met with local Fairtrade activists to discuss support for the city’s Fairtrade status.

The meeting coincided with Fairtrade Fortnight 2026, an annual two-week awareness campaign ran by Fairtrade International in collaboration with other organisations to promote ethical consumption.

In Portsmouth, certified as a Fairtrade City since 2004, a number of events are being hosted as part of Fairtrade Fortnight 2026. These events can be read about in further detail here.

As part of its own food standards agenda, this Government is committed to ensuring there are strong and enforceable standards in place to prevent the imports of lower-quality food into UK markets.

This includes only approving import deals that protect high UK animal welfare, safeguard biosecurity, and allow the Government to support innovation across the UK’s food and farming sectors.

For example, during negotiations with India, the Government refused to lower protections on goods like pork, chicken and eggs. Additionally, in talks with Korea, the Government secured new commitments on animal welfare, stronger than anything they have ever signed up to in any previous trade agreement.

Following this meeting, Stephen Morgan, MP for Portsmouth South, commented:

“It was a pleasure to meet with local Fairtrade representatives for Fairtrade Fortnight to discuss the important work of the local forum as we recognise once again our city’s Fairtrade status.

“I welcome the work of the forum and all those undertaking events during this fortnight to show the importance of buying Fairtrade and raising awareness of what’s available in local stores”.

This meeting follows Mr Morgan’s previous support of the Fairtrade Fortnight campaign in previous years, including hosting an event within his constituency office. This can be read about in further detail here.
