‘Fantastic experiences which change your life forever’ – Portsmouth MP encourages local young people to join scouts at St George’s Day event

Portsmouth MP Stephen Morgan has encouraged local young people to join the Scouts “to learn valuable life skills and have fantastic experiences which stay with you forever”.

The city MP, and former scout, made the comments at a St George’s Day event at Royal Garrison Church in Portsmouth where he renewed his Scout promise alongside over 500 local people.

During the event Mr Morgan also paid tribute to local volunteers who ensure the Scouts movement in Portsmouth continues to thrive.

Across Portsmouth, 1,300 young people are Scouts with 350 volunteers helping to make the programme possible.

Commenting, Portsmouth South MP Stephen Morgan said:

“Scouting is more than just tying knots. It’s about diving into adventures, big and small – as I saw firsthand as children from across our city came together to mark St George’s Day.

“Renewing my Scout promise alongside local people was a real privilege – as a former Beaver, Cub, Scout and Venture!

“I’d encourage all young people in our city to join the Scouts which can do so much to build confidence, unlock adventure and make memories for life.

“Of course, this is all only possible due to the hundreds of volunteers across our city whose selfless work ensures our Scouts programme continues to thrive.”

Supporting local youth groups and ensuring young people to succeed and thrive is a key focus for the Portsmouth MP.

Earlier this year, Mr Morgan backed the government’s National Youth Strategy, which will put the views of young people at the centre of decision-making on policies that affect them.
