Stephen Morgan MP has visited homes of Portsmouth residents to discuss the difference that is being made by the Government’s new Warm Homes Plan to local people.
The Warm Homes Plan, announced earlier this year, is a £15 Billion plan to help millions of families across the UK access clean power home upgrades that will cut energy bills and address fuel poverty, including solar panels, batteries, heat pumps and insulation.
The plan, which marks the biggest investment into home upgrades ever made, has been targeted at low-income families but also includes a universal offer to ensure every type of household in the country will have the chance to benefit from clean power upgrades.
A number of these upgrades will support major step forwards for Portsmouth’s own clean power provisions. For example, only 0.14% of households in Portsmouth South currently have MCS certified heat pumps, ranked 624th out of all 650 constituencies across the UK.
This has been accompanied by a series of measures taken by the Government as part of wider efforts to address the cost-of-living, including:
- Reducing energy bills by up to £150
- Freezing rail fares and prescription charges
- Increasing the National Minimum Wage and State Pension
Alongside Aura Retrofit, one of the companies responsible for the implementation of these home upgrades, Mr Morgan made a visit to the respective homes of local people Malcolm and Donna.
During his visits, the city MP was able to discuss upgrades that have either been completed or are currently ongoing, hearing from each resident about the significance of the upgrades, including their practical impact upon health and wellbeing, cost of living and sustainability.
Commenting, Stephen Morgan, MP for Portsmouth South, said:
“The Warm Homes Plan is already making for Portsmouth people like Malcolm and Donna, bringing down the cost of living for those who are most in need in our community whilst improving sustainability across the UK.
“With the affordability crisis being the number one issue facing families in our city, it is more important than ever that Labour is taking action that ensure everyone can live somewhere that is not only affordable but also suited to all times of year.
“That is why I am committed to ensuring that as many local people as possible benefit from the Warm Homes Plan. To achieve this, I will continue to collaborate with Aura Retrofit and the local authority whilst raising awareness of this historic scheme.”
