“The UK is falling behind”: Portsmouth MP calls for urgent action to make UK a clean energy superpower

By 12 April 2023No Comments

Portsmouth South MP Stephen Morgan has said that the UK urgently needs a new government to make it a “clean energy superpower.”

Speaking in the House of Commons, Mr Morgan said 13 years of failed Conservative government has left the UK falling behind in the global race for good green jobs.

The Institute of Directors recently warned that “the UK will find itself left behind in the accelerating race to lead the green economy” with the UK investing five times less in green industries than Germany, and roughly half of France and the USA.

Under the Conservatives offshore wind jobs have been offshored too – with yards across the UK closing and the UK delivering three times fewer wind jobs than Denmark, despite us being over 10 times the size.

Labour has committed to build a fairer, greener future where Britain leads the world as a clean energy superpower.

Under a Labour Government, the UK will be 100 per cent powered by clean energy by 2030, with a publicly-owned Great British Energy leading the charge.

Commenting Portsmouth South’s Stephen Morgan MP, said:

“Over the last 13 years, the Conservatives have broken their green promises and have let Britain fall behind in the global race for good green jobs.

“It is clear that our country and our city needs a mission-driven government focused on tackling the climate crisis to end short term sticking-plaster politics.

“Labour will prove that net-zero can be achieved – and that it can create jobs, cut bills and boost energy security for the people of Portsmouth and Britain.”

Stephen Morgan has made tackling the climate crisis one of his top priorities since being elected in 2017.
