City MP Stephen Morgan has said the plans to tackle waiting lists and create a national jobs and careers service will support more Portsmouth people get the best opportunities possible for them and their families.

Mr Morgan made the remarks during a visit to a local jobcentre where he thanked local workers for the valuable service they provide to Portsmouth residents.

During the visit, the city MP also discussed what can be done to support more Portsmouth people get the jobs they want.

Under the last government, the number of people out of work or not earning enough rose to record levels with long waits for treatment of health conditions, particularly mental health, contributing to the rise in economic inactivity.

Latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show there is now a near record 2.8 million people are now out of work due to long-term sickness.

The new government has hit the ground running, meeting with NHS bosses to get the 40,000 extra NHS appointments we need each week as quickly as possible.

Labour has also outlined several measures to support people into work including by reforming employment support so it drives growth and opportunity.

The party will bring Jobcentre Plus and the National Careers Service together to provide a national jobs and careers service, focused on getting people into work and helping them progress.

The Labour government will also establish a youth guarantee of access to training, an apprenticeship, or support to find work for all 18- to 21-year-olds, to bring down the number of young people who are not learning or earning.

Commenting, Portsmouth South MP Stephen Morgan said:

“Under the previous government, we saw waits for treatment of health conditions reach record lengths while young people saw reduced support to help them get into work. The result was a growing number of people in Portsmouth out of work.

“The new government has a clear plan to tackle this by ramping up NHS appointments and supporting more people into work so they can succeed and thrive.

“I was pleased to visit the Portsmouth Jobcentre to discuss these plans and what steps we can take to support people in our city to get the best opportunities possible for them and their families.“

The government’s plan to deliver growth, get people into work, and improve the labour market will be a truly cross-government effort, with the Health Secretary setting out how cutting NHS waiting times will get Britain back to health and back to work.
