On Small Business Saturday Stephen Morgan MP announced the winners of his ‘Support Local’ small business awards.

Last month, the city MP called for local people to nominate their favourite local shops and traders in his constituency in three different categories, with over 200 nominations received.

Small businesses across Milton, Southsea, Old Portsmouth, Eastney, Fratton, Landport, Buckland and Portsea were nominated, with this year’s winners being:

  • Best Family Business: Delaneys, Castle Road
  • Greenest Local Business: My Friendly Planet art and design school, Waverley Road
  • Friendliest Local Business: Baker Miller, Highland Road

The Portsmouth MP delivered the award winners with certificates on Saturday, and thanked them for their service to our communities.

Small Business Saturday UK is a grassroots, non-commercial campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to ‘shop local’ and support small businesses in their communities.

On Small Business Saturday, customers across the UK go out and support all types of small businesses, online, in offices and in stores. Many small businesses take part in the day by hosting events and offering discounts.

£1.1 billion was spent with small businesses across the UK during last year’s Small Business Saturday, with 15.4 million people turning out to support small businesses.

Member of Parliament for Portsmouth South, Stephen Morgan MP, said:

Every penny spent at your local small business is an investment in our community, which is why supporting not only on Small Business Saturday is so important. Shopping or trading locally all year round also gives our city character and charm.

“I was delighted to announce this year’s winners of my small business awards by visiting them this weekend. They have gone above and beyond in serving our city’s communities this year.

“Thank you to all constituents who nominated their favourite local businesses in Portsmouth”.

Ahead of Small Business Saturday this weekend, the Shadow Business Secretary launched Labour’s Plan for Small Business.

Developed alongside SME leaders, this is a comprehensive policy programme designed alongside businesses that offers a serious blueprint to create the long-term environment businesses across the country are crying out for so they can contribute to our mission to have the highest sustained economic growth in the G7.
