City MP Stephen Morgan hosted Defence Minister Maria Eagle at His Majesty’s Naval Base on Thursday where they discussed investment opportunities at the Base to ensure it is fit for the future.

The Portsmouth South representative hosted the Minister of State for Defence Procurement on the week where the Government announced it will deliver the biggest sustained boost to defence spending since the Cold War.

On the visit, joined by Labour MP for Portsmouth North Amanda Martin, the group toured the base and discussed opportunities to invest in innovation and skills needed to meet future challenges and to secure the Base’s long-term future.

Mr Morgan said the naval base should serve as an engine for jobs and growth, strengthening our nation’s security and economy.

This week the Labour Government announced it would increase defence investment to 2.5% of GDP by April 2027 – with an ambition to reach 3% in the next parliament as economic and fiscal conditions allow.

Labour is seeking to address some of the problems of the past which have held back growth in the defence sector, including inefficient spending, skills shortages, a lack of focus on exports and long-term partnerships.

The Government will deliver for British businesses and the public through this step-change in approach.

Commenting on the visit, Portsmouth South MP Stephen Morgan said:

“In the heart and home of the Royal Navy, it is clear HMNB Portsmouth is fizzing full of potential to be an engine for defence jobs, new technology and skills training, strengthening our national security while driving growth in our city’s economy.

“It was a pleasure to welcome Minister Eagle to the Naval Base to discuss the base’s bright, long-term future.

“The Naval Base has been an integral part of our city for centuries. I will continue working with the Minister to ensure it is an integral part of our country’s national security for centuries to come.”

Commenting on the government’s defence spending increase, Portsmouth South MP Stephen Morgan said:

“We are facing a once-in-a-generation moment for the collective security of our country and our continent.

“As a leading European power, the UK must step up to safeguard continental security on an enduring basis.

“That’s why the government announced this week  the biggest sustained boost to defence spending since the Cold War,  safeguarding our collective security and funding the capabilities, technology and industrial  capacity needed to keep the UK and our allies safe.”

This Government has committed to ensuring defence is an engine for driving economic growth in Portsmouth and across the country.
