Shadow Minister comments on school building closures

By 1 September 2023No Comments

Shadow Minister for Schools and Portsmouth South MP Stephen Morgan commenting on the Department for Education’s decision to partially or wholly close schools because they contain crumbling concrete, said:

“This is a shocking situation which once again demonstrates the incompetence of this Conservative government.

“Ministers have known for years that our school estate has major problems. Now mere days before children are to return, schools across the country are closing because they’re at risk of collapse.

“Despite our repeated warnings, Ministers have refused to get a grip on this situation and many parents still don’t know if their child’s school is at risk of collapse from crumbling concrete. Ministers must come clean, publish the list of schools affected, and sort this situation out urgently.

“You can’t give children a first class education in second rate buildings. The next Labour government will ensure schools are fit for purpose and children are safe”
