Portsmouth raised MPs Stephen Morgan for Portsmouth South and Dame Meg Hiller for Hackney have joined together to host pupils from their respective constituencies for a ‘Westminster Experience Day’, aiming to provide young people with the opportunity to learn more about Parliament and the UK’s democratic system.

The experience day, taking place in Parliament tomorrow (24 October), will see the young people receive a tour of the parliamentary estate; attend Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Questions in the House of Commons; take part in a Q&A session with Stephen Morgan MP and Dame Meg Hillier MP for Hackney South; and have career talks with parliamentary staff.

Having both attended schools in Portsmouth, Mr Morgan and Dame Meg Hillier expressed their commitment to providing young people in their constituencies with opportunities they did not have access to during their education.

The Westminster Experience Day will be aiming to demystify how Parliament works and promote parliamentary careers for young people who may not have ordinarily considered this career path.

The Portsmouth MP will be hosting young people from a number of local charities and the City of Portsmouth College.

Ahead of the experience day, commenting Portsmouth MP Stephen Morgan said:

“Nothing is more important to the future of our country than giving young people the opportunities they need to thrive, which is why I am delighted to be joining forces with Dame Meg Hillier MP to host a Westminster Experience Day for young people in our constituencies.

For too long Parliament has remained inaccessible for the majority of young people, who often reach the end of their education without having had the opportunity to visit Parliament and learn more about how our democracy works in practice.

From Southsea to Shoreditch, our inner-city young people deserve the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular activities such as this, to support their development and widen their career choices in the future”

Mr Morgan regularly hosts local schools in Parliament and regularly visits all schools in his constituency.
