Portsmouth MP writes to new Defence Secretary urging her to prioritise our veterans

Following the news that Gavin Williams had been sacked from his position as Defence Secretary for his role in the Huawei leak, it was announced that Penny Mordaunt MP would replace him.

Portsmouth South MP, Stephen Morgan wasted no time in writing to the new Secreatry of State to lobby her on an issue he cares deeply about, services for our veterans.

In the letter, Mr. Morgan has said:

“We need to see legislation passed that sees coroners begin to record suicides that occur within the veteran community and… more funding allocated to veteran specific mental health services.

A tailored, bespoke service that reflects the sacrifices made by our brave ex-service personnel is what they deserve.”

Mr Morgan has so far asked questions in Parliament, met with veterans’ organisations and hosted a Westminster Hall debate in attempts to get the government to take action over these pressing concerns.

On Penny Mordaunt’s appointment, Mr. Morgan has said:

“I welcome the news that fellow Portsmouth MP, Penny Mordaunt has been appointed as Defence Secretary. As with her predecessor, I will be extensively lobbying her and the MoD to make these changes as a matter of urgency.

We have seen enough discussion and debate, now we need action. My request is clear, we need to see a legislative change that sees coroners record veteran suicide and we need to see tailored mental health services for ex-service personnel.

I hope the Secretary of State will meet with me and veterans organisations to make this happen.”
