Portsmouth MP praises community organisers of ‘Portsea Carnival’

Stephen Morgan MP joined hundreds of local people and families as he officially opened the colourful Portsea Carnival through the city’s streets today.

The event is completely organised by local mums and community groups in Portsea. A parade took place around the area starting and finishing at the popular John Pounds Centre with this year’s theme being ‘mythical creatures’. The Carnival was the first since 2019 following the pandemic.

The city MP has been a long standing supporter of the volunteer group and has helped secure funding from the Arts Council to ensure the celebrations were a success.

Recognising the hard work of local volunteers the Portsmouth South MP said:

“On behalf of the people of Portsmouth and this community I want to say a massive thank you to PEG in making Carnival this year another fantastic success. You have shown our city what Portsea is made of.

“The event was alive with colour and costume and it was a huge pleasure to officially open this fantastic community celebration.

“Very well done to all those who made today so special for local people and families after what has been a tough couple of years. By the community working and coming together today memories were made for children and young people in this special part of Portsmouth”.

Mr Morgan also praised the efforts of Colas and the local police for keeping attendees safe.
