City MP Stephen Morgan is fighting to rescue local charity the Beneficial Foundation following news that the organisation is in financial trouble.
The charity, which for 40 years has helped people with intellectual and physical disabilities into work through training, was frozen on Friday after reporting significant financial losses.
Mr Morgan visited the charity and discussed the current situation with staff, he also met with the Chief Executive of Portsmouth City Council to discuss the issues.
This was also followed up with a letter to the Chair of the Foundation Trustee Board David Horne where, as someone who has worked with the not-for-profit sector for many years, Stephen asked questions about the rationale behind the trustee board’s decision and offered his support.
Stephen Morgan MP said:
“This is a charity that for 40 years has done great work in supporting those with disabilities into the workplace.
“When I had the pleasure of meeting service users, I was struck by how the Beneficial Foundation helps some of the most vulnerable people in our city lead healthy and independent lives.
“I will continue to offer whatever support I can to ensure that the charity can continue its important work, it would be a true loss to our city if it closed down for good.”
Mr Morgan has asked the city council if there is anything that can be done to help secure the future of the charity.
