Stephen Morgan, MP for Portsmouth South, and Amanda Martin, MP for Portsmouth North, will be joining the Pompey Sleepout taking place on 23 April at Fratton Park to raise money for Pompey in the Community and SPARK Community Space.
Local charities Pompey in the Community and SPARK Community Space have organised the event to not only fundraise for community work but also stand in solidarity with those facing homelessness across the city.
This follows an unfortunate rise in Portsmouth’s homelessness in recent years, with it being reported in 2024 that the number of people requiring temporary accommodation in Portsmouth had risen by 54%.
Since coming into office, Stephen Morgan MP and Amanda Martin MP have remained dedicated to taking action that tackles and raises awareness of this issue, examples of which can be read about in further detail here and here, and will be joining this event as part of that commitment.
Currently, the charities expect to see more than 100 people joining the Pompey Sleepout and have already raised over £7,000 for the event, which will go towards each organisation’s respective community work to support those in need.
Pompey in the Community collaborates with Portsmouth Football Club to promote education, healthy living, sporting participation and achievement among vulnerable and disadvantaged people of all ages, whilst SPARK Community Space aims to help people who don’t feel like they fit in, to access the support and services they need.
You support the vital missions of these charities and read in further detail about their specific work on homelessness, here and here.
Commenting, Stephen Morgan, MP for Portsmouth South, said:
“I am proud to be participating in Pompey in the Community and SPARK Community Space’s upcoming Pompey Sleepout.
“Beyond fundraising, this night is a valuable opportunity to spread awareness, show compassion, and stand alongside those who need support most in our city.
“I am also calling on Portsmouth people if they can to donate towards these two wonderful organisations, to help ensure that they can continue their important community work into the future”.
Amanda Martin MP for Portsmouth North said:
“I’m really pleased to be teaming up once again with Pompey in the Community to take part in their annual Pompey Sleepout.
This year, they are working alongside Spark Community Space to shine a light on the vital work both charities do in our city, while raising important funds to continue the great work they do across Portsmouth.
Just as importantly, the event brings people together business leaders, community organisations and football fans all united by a shared determination to make our city a better place for everyone.”
