Stephen Morgan MP has welcomed the Department for Transport’s new wave of active travel grants, which have allocated the Portsmouth local transport authority with additional funding as part of a £300 million pledge.
This grant will support the development and construction of walking and cycling facilities, ensuring residents have increased access to active travel alternatives. Funding has previously been provided in four waves; this fifth wave providing Portsmouth with funding for the 2024-25 period toward improved crossings and junctions, along with new footpaths and cycle tracks.
For 2025 to 2026 Portsmouth will receive over £400,000 for active travel schemes.
With these active travel improvements, Portsmouth will feel the nationwide benefits of an overall increase of 30 million more journeys by bike or foot every year. The health and commuting impacts of this increase will result in an annual 43,000 fewer sick days and a £9 million boost to the economy.
This funding announcement comes as part of an almost £300 million pledge for walking, wheeling and cycling schemes, including an allocation of £25 million for the National Cycle Network in 2025.
Continued support for active travel is an important part of the government and Department for Transport’s priorities for environment and health, helping to shift England’s preferred methods of travel and bringing us closer to delivering on Net Zero.
Commenting, Stephen Morgan MP for Portsmouth South said:
“Making it simple and safe to walk, wheel or cycle to schools, shops and workplaces is one of the most effective actions we can take to improve Portsmouth’s health.
“Walking and cycling is an affordable way to get around and is hugely beneficial for both mental and physical health.
“This funding will help make Portsmouth a happier, healthier and greener place to live.
“This investment will not only provide better connectivity but boost local businesses, grow local economies and ease pressure on the NHS, helping us deliver our Plan for Change.”
Mr Morgan has taken a range of actions to improve cycling accessibility in Portsmouth, including campaigning for active travel investments; tabling questions to the last Government on active travel funding; and meeting with active travel campaigners and cycling charities.
Every summer, Mr Morgan invites constituents to join him and Portsmouth Cycle Forum for a bike ride around the constituency
