This Government has introduced the new National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF), a landmark change to planning rules to make them simpler, faster and more rules-based.
Changes introduced by the NPPF will make it easier and faster to develop local plans and for local authorities to set a strategic vision for housing and growth, helping Portsmouth to fulfil its potential.
This new framework will create simple, clear rules for where homes can be built and how they should be designed, ensuring there is enough infrastructure and green space.
Not only will this support local growth and small business development, as Portsmouth has also felt the unfortunate consequences of Britain’s housing crisis, this city will benefit from changes designed to improve the efficiency of housing developments across the country.
Additionally, the NPPF has been designed to help deliver the ‘Pride in Place’ programme by supporting revitalisation of high streets, heritage assets and local community spaces.
Portsmouth will benefit significantly from this element of the NPPF as both Paulsgrove and Landport have been selected to receive a combined £40 million as part of the Pride in Place programme.
Commenting, Stephen Morgan, MP for Portsmouth South, said:
“With 14 years of Conservative mismanagement having had disastrous impact on Portsmouth’s housing and growth, I have been calling for decisive action to change existing planning regulations.
“This Government’s new National Planning Policy Framework will help to unlock our city’s major potential by stimulating local business and ensure investment in our city centre.
“Additionally, the people of Portsmouth will be given greater access to housing as development speed improves, correcting an issue I know has affected many local people.”
