Stephen Morgan MP pays tribute to life-saving work of RNLI crews in city
Portsmouth South MP visited Portsmouth Lifeboat station to meet with volunteers and discuss their work, as well as the challenges they face in performing their life-saving duties.
The station is the third busiest in the UK and entirely managed and operated by volunteers. The crew are on a paging system providing standby cover 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and man the lifeboats when requested by HM Coastguard via the pagers.
A lifeboat station was first established in Portsmouth in 1886, located on Southsea seafront, and the fine tradition of past lifeboatmen continues to be upheld by present lifeboat crews at Eastney Point. Stephen was joined on the visit by local resident Luke Evans, Labour’s candidate for Eastney and Craneswater in the city council elections next month.

“RNLI volunteers make an enormous contribution to our city and all that use and our seafront and water. They’re ready to go at the buzz of a pager, 365 days a year, and their dedication in keeping us all safe at sea is invaluable, not to mention selfless.
I took the opportunity to thank the team of volunteers the huge contribution they make to our city by keeping residents safe at sea”.
