Local MP joins national campaign to celebrate supported housing

Portsmouth South’s Member of Parliament Stephen Morgan is highlighting the contribution supported housing makes to the city as part of today’s ‘Starts at Home’ day.
Starts at Home, now in its second year and run by the National Housing Federation, celebrates how supported housing helps hundreds of thousands of vulnerable people regain their independence and confidence.
Housing associations provide a wide range of vital supported housing services including sheltered accommodation, refuges for domestic violence victims, homelessness shelters and housing for those with disabilities.
Stephen Morgan’s support comes as uncertainty surrounds the future funding of supported housing.
The National Housing Federation and its members are campaigning to persuade the Government to commit to ensuring that every person who needs extra support has a home that meets their needs.
As part of the campaign, Stephen visited the staff team at St George’s Court, Hambrook Street in Southsea, provided by CEESA Housing Association, to hear more about the challenges the sector faces.
Stephen Morgan MP said:
Housing helps transform people’s lives in communities across our country.
Supported housing providers see people who have been ill, have recovered and got their lives back on track through supported housing. They see how people who have not had the best opportunities, have now been able to take ownership of their lives in a safe and supportive environment.
That’s why I’m supporting the Starts at Home campaign which aims to celebrate and advocate for supported housing.

I want to help ensure that people who need extra support in our great city will always have a safe home that meets their needs”.
David Orr, Chief Executive at the National Housing Federation said:
Supported housing helps people to live independently and achieve their aspirations in a safe and secure home.
It is a critical time for supported housing; we must highlight how vital a lifeline it is to so many vulnerable people and show Government why supported housing should be put on a secure and sustainable footing for the future.”
