Labour is stepping up pressure on the Conservatives urging Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng to come before the House of Commons on Tuesday to take responsibility for his disastrous mini-Budget on behalf of the Prime Minister and her government.

The party have said they will use the Parliamentary devices available to pressure Kwarteng to u-turn on the mini-Budget, and to take responsibility for agreeing to a fantasy mini-Budget dreamt up by Prime Minister Liz Truss during the Tory leadership contest.

But they have also issued a call to Tory MPs to say that it’s vital they speak up for constituents and also make their views about the mini-Budget public, and to work with Labour in putting pressure on the government to change direction.

It comes as mortgages continue to rise and prices soar in the face of the economic crisis as a consequence of the government’s mini-Budget.

The Member of Parliament for Portsmouth South, Stephen Morgan, said:

“Liz Truss needs to reverse her government’s kamikaze Budget and abandon their discredited, dangerous trickle-down approach.

“Portsmouth needs practical support this winter, not warm words about a backward economic ideology that is running our country into the ground.

“If the UK continues with the same level of growth it has seen for the last decade, Poland will be richer than Britain in about 12 years’ time.

“Only Labour can deliver the stable economy that Portsmouth and the UK so desperately need.”

Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves MP said:

“This is a Tory crisis that has been made in Downing Street, and that is being paid for by working people.

“Families worried sick about bills haven’t even had so much as an apology from the Prime Minister or Chancellor, the architects of chaos unleashed on the British economy and family finances.

“Labour have forced this Tory government to u-turn throughout the cost of living crisis and we will do all we can in our power to do so again to get them to reverse this disastrous, kamikaze budget.

“We need stability for our economy now and a real plan for growth that only a Labour government will bring. It will be up to Labour to clean up the mess of the Conservatives once again.”
