Patrols by the local police have been increased in Commercial Road, following an assault earlier this week.
A 21-year-old man was walking near to Burton, at the junction of Commercial Road and Arundel Street, when a plastic drainpipe was thrown from the roof of the shop and hit him.
The victim’s head was split open; the man was seen by a paramedic and received stitches at a local treatment Centre.
Sergeant Richard Holland, in charge of the Charles Dickens Safer Neighbourhood Team said:
“This was a serious incident of assault, which resulted in a man requiring medical treatment for a head injury. This type of behaviour could potentially cause more significant injury and so we are taking this incident extremely seriously.
While we believe this was an isolated incident, we have received a number of reports of people on the rooftops of the shops, which we’re looking into to see if they are linked”.
Cllr Stephen Morgan, ward councillor for the area, added:
“I am assured the police are taking urgent action on this serious incident.
