The Government will publish a Green Paper on the long term funding of social care by summer 2018, it has announced this week.
Stephen Morgan Member of Parliament for Portsmouth South is a long term campaigner for a better deal for social care. He said:
“Our ageing society represents one of the biggest challenges of our time – every single family is affected. We need a long-term plan to improve health and care and the lives of the oldest in society. Otherwise, these services will remain in fire-fighting mode.
The government’s forthcoming green paper is a prime opportunity to act now and build health and care provision fit for the many, not just the few. The government must now get on with that job and deliver for our great city and deliver for Britain”.
Barbara Keeley MP, Labour’s Shadow Minister for Social Care,said:
“This complacent Tory Government is dragging its feet over the long term funding of social care at a time when the system is creaking under winter pressures.
Scandalously, on this trajectory it will have taken a year to publish this Green Paper from the date it was announced and will be even longer before we have a clear policy from the Government.
Alarmingly, it also does not appear that the Green Paper will consult on working age people with social care needs.
Given the current crisis in social care, the Tory Government must take immediate action to find a long-term solution to the social care crisis it has created.”
