Residents were shocked this week to learn at the Portsea Action Group – a residents’ forum – of an important school road safety sign being vandalised at St. George’s Beneficial Church of England Primary School on Hanover Street in Portsea.
The sign, paid for by the school, was displayed on a fence to improve pedestrian safety and stop people inconsiderately parking near important entrances to the site.
Sandra Gibb, headteacher at St. George’s, reported to residents the banner was vandalised by someone cutting two large heart shapes out of it on Valentine’s Day – 14 February.
Cllr Stephen Morgan, ward councillor for the area, said:
“This is some of the first vandalism seen at the school in many years.
Maybe this was lighthearted fun or a romantic gesture but whilst someone may have gained personally on Valentine’s Day, this was the wider community’s loss”.
Markings on the road and the sign help children to be seen more easily when crossing the road. Plans are being made to replace the banner for the benefit of the school’s community.
