City MP Stephen Morgan has said the government’s plans to harness the power of technologies including artificial intelligence (AI) will improve NHS services for Portsmouth patients.

Mr Morgan made the comments following a visit to QA Hospital where he met with the research team looking at innovation, respiratory research and robotic surgery using technologies from the Republic of Korea and United States.

During the visit Mr Morgan also spoke with hospital staff and discussed how the government’s plans will help tackle waiting lists and get the NHS back on its feet.

Alongside wider reforms and investment to get make the NHS fit for the future, the Labour Government has committed to using technology to transform the speed and accuracy of diagnostic services, saving potentially thousands of lives.

The Government will also reform structures to drive innovation and faster regulatory approval for new technology and medicines to improve patient care in Portsmouth.

The new government has hit the ground running, meeting with NHS bosses to get the 40,000 extra NHS appointments we need each week and 700,000 urgent dental appointments up and running as quickly as possible.

Commenting, Portsmouth South MP Stephen Morgan said:

“I was delighted to visit the QA Hospital research team to see the innovative work they are doing to improve care for Portsmouth patients.

“Alongside the wider reforms the government is making to get our health service back on its feet, it’s vital we harness the enormous technological breakthroughs we’re seeing to support our local NHS.

“It’s therefore great to see the new government incentivising the development of these technologies which will provide Portsmouth patients with better and quicker treatment.”

Mr Morgan has long track record of speaking up for local health services and frontline staff in Parliament, and campaigning for our NHS to be properly funded, staffed, and resourced.

The government’s wider plan to repeat the success of the last Labour government and cut NHS waiting lists includes:

  • 40,000 extra appointments a week at evenings and weekends
  • Double the number of NHS scanners
  • The biggest expansion of NHS staff in history
  • Using spare capacity in the private sector to get patients seen faster
