Portsmouth South MP Stephen Morgan has called on Hampshire County Council to halt its plan to close Stubbington Study Centre, a much-loved facility used by children in Portsmouth and across Hampshire.
Mr Morgan met with those who’ve spearheaded the campaign to save the centre, and pupils from Meon Junior School today who shared letters they had written to the council asking for the Centre to be kept open.
The MP has heard from constituents including teachers, support staff and parents who speak highly of the transformative impact the centre has on the of their children.
The city MP, who visited Stubbington Study Centre himself as a child growing up in Fratton, discussed with campaigners and children the positive impact the centre has for children’s wellbeing and development.
The centre is renowned for providing memorable outdoor pursuits and experiences, and introducing children to nature.
Commenting, Portsmouth South MP Stephen Morgan said:
“Stubbington Study Centre has provided life-changing opportunities for children across Hampshire for decades. It’s a brilliant community asset which benefits all children, including those from our city centre who sometimes don’t get much interaction with nature.
“I fondly remember my experiences there as a child. It’s a place where you make memories for life, so it would be intensely disappointing if it was to close.
“The loss of this facility would be deeply felt by schools, families, and communities alike, which is why I’ve written to the County Council asking they think deeply about this decision.”
Mr Morgan is lobbying Hampshire County Council to make sure campaigners and children’s voices are heard in the decision-making process.
