The Local Government Association (LGA), which represents councils from every part of the country, has spoken with one voice and are telling us that childrenās social services are on the brink of collapse.
Andrew Gwynne MP, Labourās Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, has responded to analysis by the LGA on childrenās social care budgets.
He said:
āThis isnāt the view of a few local councils, these are local authorities from every part of the country and they are reporting very serious disparities in the care they can provide due to budget cuts.
Councils have worked hard to make savings, but they are running out of options. We all want every single child, no matter their geography or family situation, to receive the best care and protection when needed, but right now, that is not happening.
This is yet another sign of the governmentās misplaced priorities – they can find a Ā£1 billion bung for the DUP to stay in the job but are failing to provide the funding childrenās services desperately need.ā
Stephen Morgan, Member of Parliament for Portsmouth South, added:
āCouncils are facing a Ā£2 billion funding gap for childrenās services in just three yearsā time. Across the nation they are doing what they can to respond to the significant underfunding in childrenās social care.
I want to see every single child succeed in life. It is high time the government commits to the life chances of children and young people by acting urgently to address the growing funding gap councils face.ā
