Chancellor’s Spring Statement lets Portsmouth down yet again

Today the Government delivered its Spring Statement in the House of Commons, alongside the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) forecasts, which city MP Stephen Morgan says ‘lets Portsmouth down again’

Responding to the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s Spring Statement, Stephen Morgan MP, Member of Parliament for Portsmouth South, said:

“Today the Chancellor boasted about employment figures, what he has not taken into account is the nearly 4 million people who are in insecure work. That ‘s 1 in 9 people in Portsmouth who go to bed a night without knowing what the rest of the year holds for them.

The Chancellor’s massaged statistics highlight how out of touch the Government is with working people.

Mr Hammond had the chance to deliver a budget for Portsmouth today. For us that means ending the £3.7m cuts to city schools and colleges, tackling the social care crisis and proper funding for the NHS, putting bobbies back on the beat and cancelling police cuts, properly equipping our Royal Navy and investing in a dry dock for our nation’s carriers, realistic funding for Portsmouth to prepare for a no-deal, and investing in our high streets and end cuts to services we all rely on.

Rather than actions to end austerity, we got more market studies, reviews and consultations. Sadly the great people of Portsmouth have been let down yet again by this failing Government”.
