Portsmouth MP Stephen Morgan has backed a bill that will crack down on water bosses who pollute.
This week Mr Morgan voted for the Water (Special Measures) Bill which will deliver:
- Tough penalties for law-breaking water bosses
- New powers to ban bonuses for rogue water executives
- Severe fines for water companies polluting our waterways
- More investment into our water system that works for you
The Bill delivers on the manifesto pledges to clean up the water sector, including significantly increasing the ability of the Environment Agency to bring forward criminal charges against law-breaking water executives.
It will also introduce independent monitoring of every sewage outlet, with water companies required to publish real-time data for all emergency overflows. Discharges will have to be reported within an hour of the initial spill.
Commenting, Portsmouth South MP Stephen Morgan said:
“For far too long raw toxic sewage has been pumped into the Portsmouth’s waters.
“At the last election I campaigned to clean up the water sector and to bring forward criminal charges against law-breaking water executives.
“This bill delivers on those promises. We won’t be able to fix the broken water system overnight, but this Bill is a major first step on that journey.”
