Local Labour candidates a ‘fantastic’ reflection of Portsmouth’s diversity says City MP

Stephen Morgan MP has praised the ‘fantastic’ level of diversity in Portsmouth Labour’s candidates standing in Thursday’s elections.

The local Labour team for the 2021 elections include a clear 50:50 male and female split, the first openly trans woman candidate, a number of candidates from ethnically diverse and LGBT+ communities and candidates from all walks of life and experiences.

Labour will be fielding a total of 14 candidates for Portsmouth City Council, with the Labour Group who currently hold six seats headed up by Cllr George Fielding.

The May 6 elections will be the first elections following the 2019 general election, where Liberal Democrats suffered their worst result since 1918, finishing with just 11% share of the vote.

The Member of Parliament for Portsmouth South, Stephen Morgan MP said:

“It’s fantastic to see the level of diversity in the candidates Portsmouth Labour is putting forward in this local election.

“Our city is greatly enriched by those from so many different backgrounds and their experiences from all walks of life deliver invaluable insights for the plans Labour has for our city.

“Labour has a plan to deliver the greener, fairer city we all know Portsmouth can be, which is why it is so important to vote for your local Labour candidate on Thursday 6 May.”
