Stephen on the frontbenches

Having spent over 15 years working in local authorities as an officer across areas such as community involvement and strategy and performance, Stephen has always had a keen interest in supporting our councils.

In July 2017, Stephen was promoted to the position of Parliamentary Private Secretary within the Communities and Local Government team. Here he provided support to Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Andrew Gwynne MP.

In July 2019, Stephen was subsequently promoted to Shadow Communities Minister where his brief includes areas such as adult social care, children’s services, community cohesion and race equality.

On his role as Shadow Minister, Stephen said:

“Local Government is the lifeblood of this nation. From keeping our communities safe to administering vital public services – the key role they play in our society is undeniable.

For too long cities like Portsmouth and others across this nation have been neglected and forgotten.

Our communities have been stripped of assets, hitting the poorest hardest with vicious welfare cuts and a continued assault on local authorities by starving them of funding.

My role as Shadow Communities Minister gives me the opportunity to challenge the Government’s actions and places me in a position to stand up for Portsmouth”
