Government defeated on child poverty

Child poverty is a real issue across communities in Charles Dickens ward

The Government were defeated in the House of Lords this week over proposals to change the way child poverty is measured.

Peers approved an amendment to the Welfare Reform Bill which blocks Conservative plans to abolish income-related child poverty targets.
This will mean the Government will have to continue to publish annual data on child poverty measured with reference to average household income.
The national charity, Child Poverty Action Group has welcomed the decision.
Stephen said “In Charles Dickens ward up to 65% of children live in poverty….
…In today’s age, that is unacceptable, and it’s one of the reasons I’m standing for the council. Our community needs strong representation on social issues like this and the council needs to do more to both address the root cause of poverty in the city, and support the most vulnerable families across our communities.”
